Mosquitoes

There are numerous diseases that mosquitoes carry. Here are a few that a prevalent within US borders

• West Nile Virus – First appearing in Uganda in 1937, it later spread globally, appearing in the United States in 1999. West Nile Virus is characterized by its flu-like symptoms which include: fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches.
• St. Louis Encephalitis – transmitted from mosquitoes to birds and then to man, symptoms St. Louis Encephalitis can range from flu-like to life-threatening. On the low end, this disease can cause the victim to have a sore throat, headaches, and body aches. On the high end, however, the victim can have severe headaches and a high fever, with seizures and coma soon following. St. Louis Encephalitis, when the infection is serious, can cause severe and lasting brain damage.
• Chikungunya – While this disease is mostly found in US territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, it has been found in the United States locally before. The main symptom is excruciating joint pain which can last several weeks.
• Dog Heartworm – Mosquitoes even threaten the lives of our canine companions. Heartworms, which are spread through the bite of mosquitoes, can result in the death of dog and cats. While it is not possible to prevent our pets from obtaining this disease, preventative measures (pills/injections) can be taken to lower the risk.

There are numerous mosquito-borne diseases, but many are not known to exist within the borders of the United States.
