Millipedes and centipedes are not pests that are a major threat to people or animals although they are unattractive. A millipede has two sets of legs for segment of its body and appears to move in a wave like motion. Millipedes legs are shorter and cannot move very fast. Millipedes feed on decaying plants and plant matter and can damage roots if there are too many of them in soil. Some are especially attracted to greenhouse plants. A centipede can travel at a much faster rate.
Signs of Millipedes
Some centipedes can live as long as six years, are poisonous, and have the ability to bite. Centipedes in the Southern part of the US get to be the largest and can grow up to 6 inches long. A centipede can be distinguished from a millipede because it has fewer legs. They use this primarily to kill the insects they are going to eat. To a human being it feels like a bee sting and can be dangerous if there is an allergic reaction. Millipedes are not poisonous but emit a fluid when they try to defend themselves. They can project this fluid several inches. The fluid causes irritation to skin and should be removed right away. It may take additional time to scrub and remove the odor it leaves behind.
House Centipedes in Baltimore
House centipedes can move quickly and do not require moisture like some species of centipedes do. The most likely time to see millipedes and centipedes in your home or business is in the spring and in the fall. They are considered to be beneficial in the sense that they eat and control the population of other insects.
